U.S. Men's Hockey Ends 46-Year Drought with Overtime Thriller Against Canada

Matt Boldy scored 7:23 into overtime to give the United States its first men's hockey gold since the 1980 Miracle on Ice.

MILANO CORTINA, Italy – For 46 years, the United States men's hockey team had not won Olympic gold.

That drought ended Saturday night in a game that will be replayed for decades.

Matt Boldy scored 7 minutes and 23 seconds into overtime, lifting the United States to a 3-2 victory over Canada in the gold medal final. The goal sent a sold-out arena into chaos and triggered a pile of American players along the boards behind the Canadian net.

The United States last won gold in 1980 β€” the legendary "Miracle on Ice" in Lake Placid. Between then and tonight, the Americans had taken silver twice and bronze twice.

"This one is for everyone who wore this jersey and didn't get to stand on top," said U.S. captain Auston Matthews, who assisted on the winner. "We talked about it before the game: 1980 was magic. But it was time to make our own magic."

HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED

Canada dominated the first period. Connor Bedard scored at 12:44, and Canada outshot the U.S. 14-6.

The Americans answered in the second. Jack Hughes stripped a defenseman behind the net and fed Brady Tkachuk, who one-timed it past Skinner at 3:18. Canada reclaimed the lead through Nathan MacKinnon on the power play at 16:02.

The third period was a goaltending masterpiece. Oettinger stopped 17 shots, including a breakaway save on Crosby with six minutes left. With 2:11 remaining, Quinn Hughes fired a point shot that deflected off Sanderson's shin and trickled past Skinner. Tied 2-2.

OVERTIME HEROICS

3-on-3 overtime was tense and open. Oettinger robbed Marchand on a 2-on-1. Skinner denied Zegras on a breakaway.

Then Boldy ended it. Matthews carried through center ice, drew two defenders, and slid a backhand pass to Boldy cutting left wing. One stride, a fake, and he roofed it over Skinner's blocker.

"I don't even remember shooting it," Boldy said. "I just saw open net and let it go."

For Canada, the loss stings. For the U.S., with an average roster age of 26.4, this may be the beginning of a dynasty.

"We're just getting started," Matthews said, gold medal around his neck. "But tonight? We finish."
