Italy's Speed Skating Team Accused of 'Technological Doping' Over High-Tech Suits
After winning four speed skating medals, Italy faces formal complaints that their Formula 1-designed suits provide illegal aerodynamic advantage.
MILANO CORTINA, Italy β Italy's speed skating success has come under scrutiny after rival teams filed formal complaints alleging the host nation used "technologically doped" suits developed with a Formula 1 aerodynamics firm.
The Netherlands, Canada, the United States, and Japan submitted a protest to the ISU, alleging the Italian suits contain a non-compliant dimpled surface and embedded micro-riblets that provide an estimated 2.5% reduction in aerodynamic drag. In speed skating decided by hundredths of a second, that could translate to 0.3β0.5 seconds per lap.
ITALY'S MEDALS IN QUESTION
Davide Ghiotto β Men's 5000m Gold (won by 0.08 seconds, the smallest margin in Olympic history)
Francesca Lollobrigida β Women's 3000m Silver
Davide Ghiotto β Men's 10000m Silver
Andrea Giovannini β Men's mass start Bronze
"This is not a suit. It is a device," said Dutch technical director Sjors van der Horst. "The rules are clear: no surface modifications intended to alter aerodynamics."
ITALY'S DEFENSE
"Our suits are fully ISU-approved," responded Italian federation head Matteo Pedranzini. "We submitted them six months ago. No one objected until we started winning. The dimples are woven into the fabric β textile innovation, not technological doping."
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
This echoes Speedo's LZR Racer in 2008 swimming (banned in 2010), German bobsled fairings in 2018, and riblet suits banned by the ISU in 2012. Italy may have found a loophole by weaving riblets into yarn rather than applying them as surface coatings.
The ISU will conduct wind tunnel testing at the Technical University of Munich. A ruling is expected within 30 days. If the suits are found non-compliant, medals will be redistributed.
Ghiotto was defiant: "I didn't win because of a suit. I won because I was the strongest. Let them test. I have nothing to hide."
