Jordan Stolz: The American Speed Skater Built on 2,000-Watt Cycling Power

The 21-year-old from Wisconsin ranks No. 1 in the world in the 500m, 1000m, and 1500m β€” powered by 425-mile training weeks on a road bike.

MILANO CORTINA, Italy – When American speed skater Jordan Stolz isn't slicing ice at 40 miles per hour, he can be found on a road bike, pedaling up to 425 miles a week with a power output that rivals professional cyclists.

The 21-year-old from Kewaskum, Wisconsin, entered the 2026 Winter Olympics as the world No. 1 in the 500m, 1000m, and 1500m β€” the only speed skater in the world ranked first across all three sprint and middle-distance events simultaneously.

THE TRAINING

Stolz's summer cycling regime features weekly totals exceeding 425 miles, with single 5-hour rides covering 85 miles. His maximum power output: 2,100–2,300 watts β€” comparable to professional track cyclists and beyond some Tour de France riders.

"The summer is way harder than the winter," Stolz told UPI, "but you have to do it to build a huge base. The winter is more like you climb to the top and your times start going down. Summer is the build-up for the entire winter."

THE OLYMPIC STAGE

Stolz made his Olympic debut at Beijing 2022 without a medal. Milano Cortina represented his chance to convert world-ranking dominance into Olympic gold.

"I'm trying to win something," he said with a shrug before competition began.

His races come amid the Italian suit controversy β€” meaning any time he posts could be compared to competitors whose equipment is under protest. Stolz doesn't care. "I just skate," he said. "The rest isn't my problem."
