New World Record in Speed Skating – Dutch Star Smashes 15-Year-Old Mark

Jutta Leerdam clocked 1:11.02 in the women's 1000m β€” shattering Brittany Bowe's 2019 record without a high-tech suit.

MILANO CORTINA, Italy – In the midst of the Italian suit controversy, one speed skater reminded the world that raw talent still matters more than technology.

Jutta Leerdam of the Netherlands set a new world record in the women's 1000m, clocking 1:11.02 β€” shattering the previous mark of 1:11.61 set by Brittany Bowe (USA) in 2019.

Leerdam's time came in the final race of the competition, after the Italian suit protests had dominated headlines for days. She wore a standard Dutch suit, approved by the ISU and identical to what she has used all season.

"I didn't need a special suit," Leerdam said. "I needed strong legs and a clear mind."

THE RESULT

Gold β€” Jutta Leerdam (NED) β€” 1:11.02 (World Record)
Silver β€” Miho Takagi (JPN) β€” 1:12.89
Bronze β€” Brittany Bowe (USA) β€” 1:13.15

6th β€” Chiara Betti (ITA, suit under protest) β€” 1:14.22

The previous Olympic record (1:13.33) was set by Jorien ter Mors (NED) in 2014. Leerdam beat it by more than two seconds.

"Maybe now everyone can stop talking about fabric and start talking about athletes," Leerdam said.

Her world record was the only one set at the Milano Cortina speed skating venue β€” a notoriously slow, high-altitude rink. "If I can do it here, I can do it anywhere."

She plans to compete in the 2030 French Alps Games. "This record is just the beginning."
