City Council Accuses LA28 of 'Misleading' Public, Demands Financial Transparency

Council member Hugo Soto-Martínez told LA28 officials: 'The city of LA is the financial backstop to everything that you are doing.'

LOS ANGELES, USA – Tensions between the Los Angeles City Council and LA28 organizers have reached a boiling point, with council members accusing the organizing committee of a lack of transparency and misleading the public on ticketing and local hiring.

THE HEARING

During a heated committee meeting, council members directed pointed criticism at LA28 officials for a lack of financial transparency and their failure to reach an enhanced services agreement with the city.

Council member Hugo Soto-Martínez was blunt: "You don't understand — you're not a nonprofit. We are. The city of LA is the financial backstop to everything that you are doing."

LOCAL HIRING DISPUTE

Council members particularly criticized LA28 for failing to guarantee that LA businesses will receive contracts for Games-related services. LA28 has set a target of 75% of expenditure directed toward local companies and 25% toward small businesses — but council members questioned what "local" truly means, accusing LA28 of trying to make an "end run" around city requirements.

THE WARNING

Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez was among the most direct: "Bankruptcy cannot be the legacy of these Games." She demanded that any surplus revenue must cover city expenses before going into a legacy fund.

LA28 has not yet responded publicly to the council's demands. Negotiations over the enhanced services agreement are ongoing.
