LA28 Faces Housing Crisis: Olympic Village Construction Behind Schedule

The UCLA village has slipped from late 2027 to mid-2028 completion β€” with budget ballooning from $1.2B to $1.8B, cruise ships are being considered as backup.

LOS ANGELES, USA – The LA28 Olympic Village, intended to house 16,000 athletes and officials at UCLA during the Games, is reportedly behind schedule and over budget, raising concerns about readiness for 2028.

THE DELAYS

Supply chain issues and labor shortages have pushed the completion date from late 2027 to mid-2028 β€” a dangerously narrow window before the July 14 Opening Ceremony. The budget has ballooned from $1.2 billion to $1.8 billion.

THE CONTINGENCY

"We have contingency plans, including using hotels and cruise ships if necessary," said LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover.

The overruns are being covered by a combination of state funding, private donations, and IOC contributions. But the gap is straining relationships between LA28 and the City of Los Angeles β€” which is already feuding with organizers over financial transparency.

ATHLETES REACT

"I don't want to be moving into a construction zone two weeks before my race," said track star Noah Lyles. "I hope they get it together."

LA28 officials remain publicly confident. "Los Angeles knows how to build," Hoover said. "We will be ready."

The clock is ticking: the 2028 Opening Ceremony is 820 days away.
