LA28 Organizers Unveil Torch Route: All 50 States for First Time in History

A 100-day, 25,000-mile relay will visit every state capital before ending at the LA Memorial Coliseum on July 14, 2028.

LOS ANGELES, USA – For the first time in Olympic history, the torch relay for the 2028 Los Angeles Games will visit all 50 U.S. states, organizers announced at a ceremony in downtown LA.

THE ROUTE

The 100-day relay begins at the traditional lighting ceremony in Olympia, Greece, then travels to Los Angeles. From there, the flame will be flown to each state capital in alphabetical order β€” Alabama through Wyoming β€” covering an estimated 25,000 miles with 10,000 torchbearers.

"We wanted every American to feel connected to these Games," said LA28 Chairman Casey Wasserman. "The Olympics are coming home, and we're bringing them to your doorstep."

HOW IT TRAVELS

The torch will move by plane, train, car, bicycle, horse, and even canoe in Alaska and Hawaii. Each state will host a community celebration featuring local athletes, cultural performances, and youth sports clinics.

THE FINALE

The relay ends at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on July 14, 2028, where the final torchbearer will light the Olympic cauldron. Organizers have not announced who holds that honor β€” speculation includes LeBron James, Simone Biles, and Michael Phelps.

The last time the U.S. hosted a Summer Olympics (Atlanta 1996), the relay visited 42 states. The 2028 relay will be the largest in U.S. history.
