Medal Projections Give Team USA Commanding Lead at Home Games

Multiple AI models project the U.S. to win 40+ gold medals and 120+ total medals at LA28, boosted by new sports and the host-nation effect.

THE MODELS ARE BULLISH ON TEAM USA

LOS ANGELES, USA – As the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics approach, data scientists and analysts are projecting a dominant performance by the host nation, with Team USA expected to win more than 40 gold medals and over 120 total medals.

A hybrid intelligent model published in the journal Technologies projects America winning 44 gold and 124 total medals, with China also at 44 gold but only 94 total medals. The model demonstrates strong accuracy with root mean square errors of 3.21 (gold) and 4.32 (total medals).

THE HOST EFFECT IS REAL

"Compared to the 2024 Paris Olympics, the model projects a notable reshuffling in 2028, with the United States expected to strengthen its overall lead as host while countries like France are predicted to experience significant declines in medal counts," the study noted.

Other models are even more bullish. A multi-dimensional framework published in the ACM Digital Library projects the United States to lead with approximately 153 medals, while an LSTM-based model forecasts 126 medals for Team USA, with China securing 91 medals.

The host effect is real: data from past Olympics shows that host nations typically win 15-20% more medals than their historical averages.

NEW SPORTS FAVOR TEAM USA

With new sports like flag football, cricket, lacrosse, and squash added to the program β€” all sports where the U.S. is competitive β€” Team USA has a clear path to its most successful Olympic performance since at least 1984.

The key question is not whether the U.S. will top the medal table β€” barring a major upset, it will β€” but by how much.
